Fifth Critical Insight I Wish I Knew: The Final Push

Key Takeaways:

  • Reconnecting with the underlying motivations for your research can reinvigorate your drive during challenging times.
  • Seeking feedback and support is not a sign of weakness but a strategy for refining your work and bolstering resilience.
  • Embracing the inherent challenges of the final stages can lead to personal growth and a stronger, more compelling dissertation.

If you're approaching the final stages of your dissertation, remember this: It's normal to feel overwhelmed. I've been there, staring at my screen, wondering if I'd ever finish. What kept me going was remembering why I started this journey and the impact I hoped to make. Keep your eyes on the prize, and don't hesitate to lean on your support network. Here are a few tips I learned and am passing along based on the challenges I faced.

Tip 1: Remember Your ‘Why’

The first tip is to remember your why. Why did you choose to pursue a doctoral degree in the first place? What is the purpose and significance of your research? How does it contribute to your field, society, and personal growth? What is the impact you want to make with your work?

These questions can help you reconnect with your passion and motivation for your dissertation. They can help you see the bigger picture, beyond the details and challenges of the final stage. They can help you focus on the ultimate goal of your dissertation: to share your original and valuable contribution to the world.

Remembering your why can also help you overcome the impostor syndrome, the feeling that you don’t belong or deserve to be in your program or that your work is not good enough. This is a common phenomenon among doctoral students, especially in the final stage, where you face high expectations and scrutiny from yourself and others. But you are not an impostor. You are a scholar, a researcher, and a leader. You have earned your place in your program, and you have something important to say.

Whenever you feel stuck, discouraged, or insecure, remember your why. Write it down, say it loud, or share it with someone. Remind yourself of the passion, purpose, and potential of your work. This will help you stay motivated and confident in the final push of your dissertation journey.

Tip 2: Seek Feedback and Support

The second tip is to seek feedback and support. The final stage of your dissertation journey is not a time to isolate yourself or avoid communication. It is a time to engage with your committee, peers, mentors, and network. They are there to help you, not to judge or sabotage you. They want to succeed and have valuable insights and resources to offer.

Seeking feedback and support can help you improve the quality and clarity of your dissertation. It can help you identify and address any gaps, errors, or inconsistencies in your work. It can also help you prepare for your defense by exposing you to different perspectives, questions, and critiques. By seeking feedback and support, you are not admitting weakness or incompetence. You are demonstrating professionalism, humility, and openness to learning.

Seeking feedback and support can also help you cope with emotional and mental challenges of the final stage. It can help you reduce stress, anxiety, and loneliness. It can also help you celebrate your achievements, acknowledge your strengths, and boost your self-esteem. By seeking feedback and support, you are not asking for pity or validation. You are building relationships, fostering collaboration, and creating a community.

So, don't hesitate to seek feedback and support in the final push of your dissertation journey. Reach out to your committee, your peers, your mentors, and your network. Ask for their input, advice, and encouragement. Listen to their feedback, and act on it. Thank them for their support and reciprocate it. You are not alone in this journey. You have a community of support, and you can leverage it.

Tip 3: Embrace the storm

The third tip is to embrace the storm. The final stage of your dissertation journey is not a smooth or easy ride. It is a storm, full of twists and turns, highs and lows, challenges, and opportunities. It is a storm that tests your resilience, your creativity, and your courage. It is a storm that can make you feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or scared. But it is also a storm that can make you grow, learn, and shine.

In the midst of this chaotic period, I shared the following episode of my podcast, Elements of Community. This episode was a personal exploration of how I learned to see challenges as essential for resilience. It was not only about coping with the academic demands but also about transforming them into chances for individual and professional development.

Why Resilience Means Embracing Life’s Storms, Not Just Surviving Them – Elements of Community

Embracing the storm means accepting the reality and the complexity of the process, without denying or resisting it. It means acknowledging the difficulties and the uncertainties, without letting them paralyze or defeat you. It means embracing the challenges and the opportunities, without avoiding or wasting them. It means facing the storm, without fearing or fleeing it.

Embracing the storm also means trusting yourself and your work, without doubting or undermining it. It means believing in your abilities and your potential, without underestimating or overestimating them. It means trusting yourself and your work, without comparing or competing with others. It means owning your voice, your vision, and your value, without compromising or apologizing for them.

So, don't be afraid of the storm in the final push of your dissertation journey. Embrace it, learn from it, and grow with it. The storm is not your enemy. It is your ally. It is not there to destroy you. It is there to strengthen you. It is not there to stop you. It is there to propel you. You are stronger than the storm, and you can weather it.

Conclusion

In this article, I have shared some insights from my doctoral journey and how I learned to embrace the storm in the final stages of my dissertation. I hope these insights can help you navigate your own doctoral journey with more preparedness and resilience. The doctoral experience is not easy, but it is rewarding. It is an opportunity to develop your skills, knowledge, and confidence as a scholar and leader. It is also an opportunity to contribute to your field and make a positive impact on the world.

Therefore, I encourage you to approach your doctoral journey with curiosity, passion, and courage. Don’t let challenges or setbacks discourage you. Instead, use them as opportunities to grow and improve. And don’t forget to celebrate your achievements and milestones along the way. You are doing something amazing, and you should be proud of yourself.
